Seville

Seville is the capital and largest city of the Spanish region of Andalusia. It has a population of about 690,000. It is a city characterised by Flamenco, food and a rich history.

The city has a rich history dating back over 2,200 years. Its history includes Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Moores and Vikings. The city is also linked to and thrived thanks to the exploration of the Americas.

Not surprisingly, Seville is a city full of beautiful things to see.

Real Alcazar de Sevilla

Plaza de Espana is another impressive building and grounds that are well worth the visit.

Seville Cathedral is impressive and is the resting place of Christopher Columbus.

Strolling around the central historic district is an easy and fun way to spend many hours. There are plenty of interesting shops and fantastic places to eat and take a break.

The Setas de Sevilla (Metropol Parasol) is the world’s largest wooden structure and you get a great view of Seville from the walkways on top.

Festivals in Seville

On 28th February, Andalucia day is celebrated. This day tends to have more official celebrations but many homes will fly the flag on this day.

In March or April, Semana Santa or Holy Week is one of the biggest but most solemn celebrations of the year. These feature processions and beautiful floats carrying religious icons and flowers.

Two weeks later, Feria de Abril is a much more lively celebration. Flamenco and parties abound with a week’s worth of celebrations. The week ends with a massive fireworks display.

01 June is labour day with a range of celebrations to mark the day.

From 21st to 26th July Velá de Santa Ana is celebrated. This is a mix of religious celebrations, partying and events culminating in fireworks on the last night.

12 October is Spains national day Día de la Hispanidad. The day is a mix of official functions and celebrations.

Even if there isn’t anything happening at the time, you will often hear local bands practising for an upcoming event. This always gives Seville a slightly festive feel at any time of the year.

Seville airport is well connected with flights from across Spain and Europe.

Flying time from London to Seville is about 2 hours 45 minutes.

Flying time from Amsterdam to Seville is 2 hours 55 minutes.

From Cordoba it is a 1 hour 20 minute train trip

Driving from Madrid will take you around 5 hours 20 minutes.

Driving from Cordoba takes about 1 hour 50 minutes.

Malaga to Seville is a 2 hour 40 minute trip.
