Toledo
Toledo is the capital of the Castilla-La Mancha region of central Spain. It has a population of about 85,000 people. This ancient walled city is famous for its blend of medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian cultures. This is displayed in buildings and monuments throughout the city.
The city sits on a hill with a commanding view of the surrounding plains. For years it has played a pivotal role in the history of Spain.
It is a popular destination for day trips from Madrid. But you can easily spend two or three days soaking up the history of this amazing city.
Things to see and do
Toledo Cathedral dates back to 1493 and is the second largest Cathedral in Spain. It is famous for its medieval Gothic architecture and the artworks inside the Cathedral. It is one of the most visited buildings in Toledo and well worth a visit.
The old town or Casco Histórico is the main area most people want to visit in Toledo. Most of the main attractions are here or within a 5 minute walk. As you wander the cobblestone streets of the old town it can be easy to imagine you have travelled back in time to Medieval Toledo.
The Jewish Quarter is a district of the old town. It contains two former synagogues which are now museums. Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito. The quarter is a 5 minute walk west from the old town centre.
While in the Jewish Quarter visit Museo del Greco. As you’d expect it houses some of the best works of 16th century master El Greco.
Alcázar de Toledo is the massive fortress sitting at the highest point of Toledo.
The Alcázar is home to an amazing military museum and is well worth a visit. It is about a 12 minute walk from the old town heading East.
Plaza De Zocodover is the main square in Toledo. It is the centre of social activity for the city and has been for centuries. It sits about 10 minutes walk from the old town and 6 minutes walk from Alcázar de Toledo.

The nearest major airport is Madrids Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport.
