Vilanova de Arousa is another lovely Seaside town in Galicia. It is located in the province of Pontevedra. It has a population of around 10,000 and is quite picturesque compared to nearby Vilagarcia de Arousa, 12 minutes drive to the north but not as pretty as nearby Cambados, which is also a 12 minute drive but to the south.
Foreign tourists are yet to discover the region, great news if you want to avoid the crowds. It is popular with Spanish visitors seeking relief during the hotter summer months.
The large marina houses many leisure and working boats. There are many small beaches around the town and lovely views of the estuary and Isla de Arousa. The town has lovely promenades which you can enjoy strolling around and taking in the scenery.
Galicia is renowned for its seafood. When its time to eat there is great seafood to be had in the many restaurants in town. Because Vilanova de Arousa is a little off the main tourist tracks, prices are generally a little lower than you might find in nearby Cambados. Parrillada Xaxan and Restaurante Alfar both have great reputations but there are many great places to eat, especially in the older part of town.
There are a lot of nearby wineries. Many of these wineries offer tours and clear door sales so take the time to check these out. You can also do a boat tour of mussel cultivation, a great way to spend an afternoon as well
The town is just over a 50 minute drive from Santiago de Compostela. From Pontevedra it is about a 35 minute drive.
The nearest railway station is in VilagarcĂa de Arousa where you can connect from Santiago de Compostela and A Coruna in the north and Pontevedra and Vigo in the south.
A taxi fare from VilagarcĂa de Arousa train station is going to cost around 30 Euros.
