Vigo

It has a long history with the sea and houses one of the largest fishing fleets in the world. With over 9 kilometres of docks, Port of Vigo is also a regularly stop for cruise liners.

Things to do in Vigo

Generally, the walk from the port area, through the old town and up towards the centre of the city, is a pleasant way to explore. Along the way, you will discover lovely shops and cafes. You will wander into small plazas surrounded by interesting things to see and places to eat.

Having said that, parts of Vigo can be quite hilly, so if you have a specific destination in mind, its a good idea to know where it is and plan your walk so that you do not walk up and down hills unnecessarily.

Cies Islands

If you have time, a day trip to Islas Cies (Cies Islands) is well worth doing. These protected and pristine islands are accessed by a ferry trip which takes about 30 minutes. The islands are beautiful for strolling around and soaking up some sun. There is a lighthouse which you can walk up to for a panoramic view out to the Atlantic Ocean, across the islands and back to the mainland. Don’t forget your water because it can be a long trek on a hot day.

Cies

The number of visitors to the Islands is restricted so it is a good idea to book in advance.

Eating

Typical of coastal towns in Galicia, Vigo is a great place to sample traditional Galician seafood dishes. There are many tours available if you need a guide but its just as easy to wander around and try pot luck anywhere that there seem to be more locals than tourists.
