Best Day Trips from Chiclana de la Frontera
Chiclana de la Frontera is a brilliant base on Spain’s Costa de la Luz. Golden beaches, sherry cellars and white villages all sit close by. Better still, most trips take under an hour. So, grab your sunhat and pick a favourite below.
Getting around is easy, too. Buses and a handy train-tram cover the nearest towns. However, a car gives you more freedom. Not sure if it suits you? Our guide on whether renting a car in Spain is worth it can help you decide. If you want wheels, you can Hire a car with Discovercars.
Cádiz: Spain’s Oldest City by the Sea
Cádiz is the obvious first stop, and it sits just 20 to 30 minutes away. The train-tram from Chiclana runs straight into the city. That means no parking stress. Check Train Schedules and Buy Tickets on Omio.
Start with the views from Torre Tavira. This 18th-century watchtower has a camera obscura that projects live scenes of the city. Slots fill fast in summer, so book your tickets in advance.
Next, visit the golden dome of Cádiz Cathedral. Then wander down to La Caleta beach and the Castillo de Santa Catalina for sunset. Driving is possible, but old-town parking is tricky. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
Jerez de la Frontera: Sherry, Horses and Flamenco
Jerez is about 30 minutes away by car, and it is the home of sherry. Begin at González Byass, the bodega behind TÃo Pepe. You can tour the cellars and taste several wines. Tours sell out, so book ahead.
Afterwards, watch the dancing horses at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. It is a real treat, even if you are not a horse person. Then stroll through the Alcázar de Jerez, a Moorish fortress with gardens and a mosque.
New to sherry? Read our guide to visiting sherry bodegas around Jerez. You can also learn more about Andalusian sherry. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
Vejer de la Frontera: A Hilltop White Village
Vejer sits on a rocky hill about 40 minutes down the coast. It is one of the prettiest white villages in Andalusia. Whitewashed houses spill down the slopes, and the views stretch to the Atlantic.
Head first to the Plaza de España. Its tiled fountain and palm trees make a lovely coffee spot. Then walk through the Arco de la Villa, an old Moorish gate. After that, get lost in the narrow lanes of the JuderÃa quarter. Keen on more villages? Try our white villages itinerary. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
Conil de la Frontera: Laid-Back Beaches and Fried Fish
Conil is the perfect pick for a slow beach day. It lies about 35 minutes from Chiclana. Start at Conil de la Frontera itself, where the whitewashed old town is easy to explore on foot.
Playa de los Bateles is the main beach, with fishing boats and calm, shallow water. Meanwhile, Cala del Aceite is a smaller cove for a quieter swim. Finish with a plate of fried fish at a seafront bar. Fancy going further? Nearby Zahara de los Atunes has a huge, windswept beach. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
Sanlúcar de Barrameda: Manzanilla and Prawns
Sanlúcar is about 45 minutes away, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river. This is the home of manzanilla, a crisp, salty sherry. You can read more on our page for Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
Tour the cellars at Bodegas Barbadillo, then sip a glass with local prawns. Reserve your visit early through the Barbadillo website. After lunch, stroll along Bajo de GuÃa beach. You can even take a boat trip towards Doñana National Park. Sherry fans should also see our sherry towns guide. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
Arcos de la Frontera: A Cliff-Top Classic
Arcos is roughly an hour inland. Its white houses cling to a dramatic limestone ridge. Few villages look as striking from below. Learn more on our page for Arcos de la Frontera.
Begin at the Plaza del Cabildo. From here, the Mirador de la Peña Nueva offers jaw-dropping views over the river valley. Next, step inside the BasÃlica de Santa MarÃa de la Asunción. Its Gothic and Baroque details are well worth a look. Arcos also makes a great gateway to the mountains. If you have extra time, continue to Grazalema. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
Seville: A Big-City Day Out
Seville is the longest trip on this list. It takes about 1 hour 20 minutes by car, or around 90 minutes by bus. Even so, it is worth the effort. Start early to make the most of your day. Our page on Seville has plenty more ideas.
Head first to the Real Alcázar, a royal palace with stunning tilework and gardens. Queues get long, so buy tickets online beforehand. Then climb the Giralda tower at Seville Cathedral. You can also book cathedral tickets in advance. Finish at the grand Plaza de España. For more inspiration, see our things to do in Seville. If you are already in Spain, get directions.
