Miranda de Ebro is in the North East of Castile and Leon province sitting near the borders of La Rioja province and the Basque Country. It sits on the Ebro river and has a population of just over 35,000.
It is an industrial city and also acts as a transport hub for the region. There is a large bus terminal and regular train services pass through the city.
It sits less than an hours drive from several major cities in this and neighbouring provinces.
Though not the most attractive town, it has a rich history. There is a large pedestrian strip running through the centre of the town with many opportunities to shop and dine.
One of the biggest Fiestas during the year is the Fiesta of the Virgin of Altamira, who is the patron Saint of the city. The Fiesta is held in September and has a full week of activities. These include concerts, theatrical performances, sporting events as well as a solemn procession. It also includes a parade of restored carriages created by coachbuilding groups around the city.
Another big event during the year is the Fiesta of San Juan del Monte which is held in Pentecost week, which is 50 days after Easter.
A food fair is held in February featuring food from the local region as well as foods from across the regions of Spain.
In April, a book fair is held featuring thousands of second hand and hard to find titles.
In April and May there is a flower fair held in Plaza de EspaƱa on Sundays. The fair has thousands of plants for sale as well as workshops and activities for kids.
In May, a Medieval Market is held in the historic centre. This features foods, acrobats, theatrical performances and heaps of other entertainment for the whole family.
The Ebrovision Festival happens in September. It brings together the best new music bands and DJ’s from across the region as well as big-name independent international acts. The festival attracts thousands of visitors every year.
The nearest airport is in Vitoria-Gasteiz but the larger airport at Bilbao is where you are most likely to get a useful flight.
