Cangas

Whether you’re visiting for a summer holiday, a weekend escape, or a cultural adventure, Cangas welcomes travellers with open arms and endless opportunities to explore.

Things to do

From pristine beaches and scenic hikes to fresh seafood and historic sites, there’s plenty to discover in Cangas.

Relax on the Beautiful Beaches

Cangas is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Galicia, many of them boasting fine white sand and calm turquoise waters. The town’s coastline stretches for over 30 kilometres, offering a beach for every taste.

Praia de Liméns is one of the most popular, known for its clean waters and family-friendly atmosphere.

Praia de Melide, located on the Cabo Home peninsula, is surrounded by pine trees and offers a more secluded setting with spectacular sunset views.
For a quieter escape, Praia de Barra and Praia de Viñó are two pristine coves ideal for nature lovers.

Many of these beaches face the Cíes Islands, adding to their postcard-perfect scenery.

Explore Cabo Home and the Lighthouses

One of the top attractions in the area is Cabo Home, a wild and rugged headland located just a short drive or hike from Cangas. It features dramatic cliffs, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, and three iconic lighthouses — Faro de Cabo Home, Faro de Punta Subrido, and Faro de Robaleira. A coastal walking trail connects them, offering unforgettable photo opportunities, especially at sunset.

Visit the Old Town and Harbour

The old town of Cangas (Casco Vello) is a delight to explore on foot. Narrow stone streets wind between traditional Galician houses adorned with flower-filled balconies. Stop by the Church of Santiago de Cangas, a 15th-century Gothic gem, and wander down to the harbour, where fishing boats sway gently in the water. Along the promenade, you’ll find plenty of restaurants serving fresh Galician seafood—especially mussels, octopus (pulpo a feira), and locally caught fish.

Take a Boat Trip to the Cíes Islands

From nearby Vigo or Cangas, you can catch a ferry to the Cíes Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands National Park. These islands are famous for Rodas Beach, often named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The islands offer hiking trails, birdwatching, and pristine nature—perfect for a day trip or an overnight stay during the summer season.

The number of visitors to the Islands is restricted so it is a good idea to book in advance.

Enjoy Local Gastronomy and Wine

Galicia is famous for its cuisine, and Cangas is no exception. In the local taverns and seaside restaurants, you can enjoy freshly grilled sardines, razor clams, scallops, and oysters, often accompanied by a glass of Albariño wine from nearby Rías Baixas. Don’t miss the local markets where fishermen sell the day’s catch—a reminder of how deeply connected Cangas is to the sea
