Chinchó
Chinchón is one of the most beautiful historic towns in the Community of Madrid. Located around 50 kilometres south-east of the Spanish capital, it is famous for its perfectly preserved medieval centre, charming arcaded square and rich cultural heritage. With narrow cobbled streets, traditional whitewashed houses and excellent local food, Chinchón offers visitors an authentic taste of old Spain.
The town has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site and attracts visitors throughout the year. Although it is close enough for a day trip from Madrid, Chinchón rewards those who stay overnight and experience its peaceful atmosphere after the crowds leave. From historic churches and castles to local festivals and regional cuisine, there is plenty to enjoy in this picturesque destination.
What to see and do
The heart of Chinchón is the magnificent Plaza Mayor. This unique square is surrounded by more than 200 wooden balconies, creating one of Spain’s most distinctive town squares. Over the centuries it has served as a marketplace, bullring, theatre and venue for festivals. Today it is the perfect place to relax with a coffee or enjoy a traditional meal while watching daily life unfold.
A short walk uphill leads to the Castle of the Counts of Chinchón. Although much of the castle now lies in ruins, its walls still provide impressive views across the town and surrounding countryside. The castle dates back to the 15th century and played an important role in the region’s history.
Nearby stands the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the church houses an impressive painting of the Assumption by Francisco de Goya. The elegant interior and beautiful architecture make it one of Chinchón’s most important landmarks.
Another fascinating building is the Clock Tower. This is all that remains of the former Church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia after much of the building was destroyed. Today, the tower has become one of the town’s best-known symbols.
History lovers should also visit the Lope de Vega Theatre. Originally built as a palace, it later became a theatre and continues to host performances throughout the year.
The former Monastery of San Agustín has been carefully restored and now operates as a Parador hotel. Even if you are not staying there, the building is worth seeing for its impressive architecture and peaceful cloisters.
Many visitors also enjoy sampling Chinchón’s famous anise liqueur. Several traditional shops sell locally produced bottles, while restaurants use the liqueur in desserts and regional recipes.
Walking through the historic streets is one of the best ways to appreciate the town. Small squares, stone houses and colourful flower displays create excellent photo opportunities around every corner.

Local festivals and traditions
Chinchón is well known for its lively festivals, many of which take place in the famous Plaza Mayor. During the Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption in August, the town comes alive with concerts, parades, fireworks and traditional celebrations.
One of the most unusual events is the Passion Play held during Holy Week. Hundreds of local residents take part in this dramatic open-air performance, which recreates the final days of Jesus Christ. The production attracts thousands of visitors every year and has been recognised as an event of Regional Tourist Interest.
Traditional bullfighting also forms part of the town’s heritage. During certain festivals, the Plaza Mayor is transformed into a bullring using temporary wooden barriers, continuing a tradition that dates back hundreds of years.
Throughout the year, local markets showcase artisan crafts, regional foods and Chinchón’s famous anise liqueur. These events provide an excellent opportunity to experience local culture and meet residents.
Where to stay
The historic centre is the best place to stay in Chinchón. Accommodation around Plaza Mayor places you within easy walking distance of the main attractions, restaurants and cafés. Many boutique hotels occupy beautifully restored historic buildings, adding extra character to your visit.
The streets surrounding the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption offer a quieter atmosphere while remaining close to the centre. These areas are ideal for travellers looking for peaceful evenings and traditional surroundings.
For a unique experience, consider staying at the Parador de Chinchón, located within the beautifully restored former Monastery of San Agustín. The building combines historic charm with modern comfort and is one of the town’s most popular hotels.
If you are travelling by car, accommodation on the edge of town provides convenient parking while remaining only a short walk from the historic centre.
