Vilagarcia de Arousa is in the Pontevedra province of Galicia. It has a population of about 38,000 people and lies near the mouth of the Arousa river.
The town itself is not that pretty and does not have many attractions. In spite of this, the town is a good central place to explore the region from. It lies on the main rail line running north to Santiago de Compostela and A Coruna and south to Pontevedra and Vigo. The bus station also acts as a transport hub for the region. The town also acts as an administrative centre for the area so the local police station and social security offices can be busy.
The centre of town has 2 main boulevards for strolling around shopping. The north end of the boulevards is a fairly run-down shopping mall. As in all Spanish towns there are plenty of places to eat and drink.
There are a lot of things to do in the area. The nearby town of Cambados was the white wine capital of Europe in 2017 and is the centre of Albarino wine production in the region. Tours can be booked in many nearby wineries. A number of towns including O Grove, offer boat tours of oyster and mussel farms. Usually these tours are accompanied with many samples and a wine or two or three.
For fans of Spanish TV, some of the dock scenes in the series Unauthorized Living (Vivir sin permiso) were filmed here.
The town is connected by rail to Santiago de Compostela and A Coruna in the north and Pontevedra and Vigo in the south.
Santiago de Compostela lies 45 kilometres away and is a 40 minute drive.
The nearest major airport is Santiago de Compostela which is covered by many airlines.
