Valverde del Fresno is a small town in Extremadura, near the Portuguese border. It has a small population of about 2,500 people.
Unless you are looking for a very quiet rural holiday, there is not a lot to do in the village. There is a small river running through the village which can be nice to see and hear after heavy rain.
One of the biggest events of the year involves the blessing of cars in the village. Nearly every car owner lines up to drive their vehicle past the parish priest who blesses it for the coming year. This also includes various tractors and other strange farm vehicles that look like they’ve been put together from parts and probably do need blessing. I didn’t catch the name of the event and was told it traditionally involved the blessing of farm animals.

Not far away the village of San Martin de Trevejo is worth a half-day visit.
If it’s hot and you would like a swim, the Piscina Natural de Hoyos is worth a visit. It is 25 minutes drive from Valverde de Fresno and is a popular swimming spot in the area. If you like to trek you can follow the river upstream. The mountains and scenery are spectacular. There is a restaurant near the swimming area which serves excellent value meals.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay, the Hotel Rural A Velha Fabrica is very nice. This converted factory has excellent accommodation and a good restaurant. It is located on the edge of the village. There are a number of other Rural Hotels nearby offering varying degrees of luxury and services. The area is good for a quiet rural getaway
