San Martín de Trevejo is a tiny but picturesque village in the province of Caceras, in the north of the autonomous community of Extremadura. It has a population of less than 900 people but is a nice place for a side trip if you are driving in the area.
San Martin has many beautifully preserved traditional buildings. The town has won awards for its architectural preservation and is listed as being of ‘cultural interest’. The village has tiny houses with a natural spring running through the centre of the village.
In the main square there are a few restaurants to stop for something to eat or drink. The village is largely about wandering around, seeing the sites, grabbing a rustic photo and heading off again.

On the outskirts of town is Hospedería Conventual Sierra de Gata. This converted convent is a hotel and conference venue. It is very nice to stay in but check early on availability due to conferences booking it out. There are a couple of nice Casa Rurals nearby if you want to stay overnight including El Duende del Chafaril. Hotel Rural A Velha Fábrica in nearby Velverde Del Fresno is very nice.
As well as the many photo opportunities within the town, the surrounding countryside and its mountains and streams provide many more. It is also a nice and refreshing break from busier tourist destinations.
San Martín de Trevejo is about 1 hour 15 min drive from Plasencia and about 1 hour 30 mins from Caceres. There is no public transport to the town so it is literally if you are driving in the area and want a side trip, give it a try.
